[edit] New Resident Advice
[edit] Advice from Knitwit Ballyhoo
1. Keep your inventory organized. I cannot stress this enough. Once your inventory gets cluttered, it is hard to find what you are looking for.
2. If you make an object, immediately give it a name. Otherwise you will have an inventory full of "objects."
3. Don't be afraid to be adventurous. There are alot of cool places in SL, but you have to explore.
4. Make sure that you set a "safe place" for home. Aggie Island is a great place to set up as your home. This way if, while you're being adventurous, you run into a griever or any other problem, you can run away to a safe place, fast.
5. Check out the freebie places, but try to do it during the week rather than the weekend. Freebie places are usually crowded, and you will have lag time. However, they are not as crowded during week days.
I have one final tip, if you have a question about something, ask. Most people I have run into are very nice and don't mind answering questions.
[edit] Advice from Ramulous Aeon
1. Take Jen's SL Course. There is nothing else you can do that will be as helpful!!!!
2. Stay on Orientation Island as long as you can -- until you learn everything it has to teach you.
3. Read all the noobie's notecards you can find -- and try out what they say.
4. Don't overload your inventory with free stuff -- until after you have learned how to manage your inventory. Although many freebies are good deals, I ended up deleting most of them and buying better quality items.
5. Ask numerous questions of virtually any avatar you see. Most people on SL are VERY helpful if asked.
[edit] Advice from Jendanna Sosa
1. Find a nice spot to relax and read your notecards. The advice in many notecards is priceless.
2. Use your library! The library in your inventory is full of great things and many newbies don't even know its there.
3. Watch Torley Linden's Tutorials on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/user/Torley
4. Find something to do. Join a group, play in a sandbox, or attend events--something that will give you reason to logon again.
5. Travel! Open the Map tool and move your cursor around to find islands that look interesting--then visit them. Or, search PLACES for keywords that interest you, then go there. Visiting places in Second Life is inspiring and crucial to your development as an avatar. There is so much to see.
